ENCOURAGEMENT: A NECCESSITY FOR CHRISTIAN
We all need and desire hope and support in our homes, marriages, businesses, offices, ministries and in
the church of God. Often time if we do not see the necessary incentives to motivate us in what we are
doing we are left unhappy and get discouraged. No one is an island and none can live in isolation. We
need people around us to talk to and to get feedback from them with words of encouragement. Little
wonder that God in Gen 1:26-27 created man to fellowship with Him. In like manner in Gen 2:18 God
saved Adam the agony of loneliness by giving him Eve as a companion help suitable for his need. God
through the Adam and Eve establish the human race.
It is incumbent on us to interact, relate and fellowship with one another in positive ways. One of such
ways is by encouraging one another. In the present age we are inundated daily with bad news and sad
stories on television, newspaper, radio, internet including social media where only negative information
thrives. The negative reports often pollute the mind of Christians and leave nothing to cheer us. We
therefore owe ourselves duty to encourage one another.
Encouragement means the act of giving support, confidence, or hope to someone; to stimulate the
development level of someone life. To encourage someone is to inspire someone with confidence.
In our Christian journey the devil will try to plague our mind with doubts and fear. Our faith will always
be tested. Trials and temptation will always come. But even when we are seriously shaken and put to
great stress, God will enable us to gain victory if we will only stay close to Him. He has placed each and
every one around us and us around them to support one another. We are to speak encouragement to our
We first and foremost as an individual owe ourselves encouragement. We need to encourage ourselves
in the Lord. 1 Samuel 30:6
“……but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God”
In spite of all happening around us we must encourage ourselves in the Lord our God. Let songs of praise
fill your heart and mouth; sing of God’s faithfulness and love, sing of His grace and mercy that none
can give you; let your mouth confirm your faith and speak to your doubts – Psalm 59:16; Isaiah 54:1;
Colossian. 3:16. You are to use your mouth to speak good things into your life. Be your own prophet. The
word you speak to yourself determine what you get. Matthew 12:17
“For by thy words thou shall be justified, and by thy words thou shall be condemned”
You need to count your blessing instead of your seeming losses. Take your eyes from what you do not
have and concentrate on the ones you have while patiently waiting for heaven’s supply.
However, it is not enough to confess that you believe in God or you are waiting on Him, your conduct,
behavior and attitude to life must show that you believe God is able to do that which He promised. God’s
promise cannot fail. It must surely come to pass Rom 4:21. You need to be positive always and forward
looking even when it appears as if things are not turning out well as you expect. Put in more effort, check
up if you think you have missed it in anyway and re-strategise. With prayers and God’s help, everything
will be alright. Let your prayer be built around these three questions. Are you not? Did you not? Will you
1. “Are you not God? Yes, you are in charge, and you’re big enough to handle it.
2. “Did you not help us in the past?” Yes, you did help us then in the past.
3. “Will you not do it again? “Yes, you will do it again.
When you are overwhelmed that is the way you need to pray. No matter what the situation is, remind
yourself who God is, what He has done, and then ask Him to do it again. Once you have done that, you
have handed it over to Him and be ready to receive His divine solution.
Besides self encouragement we need to encourage one another as children of God. We need to support,
help and come alongside our fellow brethren with encouragement. We need genuine person with whom
we can share what we are going through. It could be our leaders or someone in our natural group, a
Christian friend or a family member. We need to ask God to bring such people into our lives who will
genuinely help our destinies. Consider Jobs friends Elipaz, Bildad and Zophar in Job 3 to 24 whom when
Job needed their encouragement most decided rather added to his woes by taking a negative view of
Job. We do not need such people in our lives.
There are times when we feel completely alone. We feel as if no one has ever experienced what we are
going through. No one could possibly know the agony of not having a child except the one waiting on the
Lord for the fruit of the womb; No one could possibly know the pain of having your husband walk out on
you except the victim. No one could possibly know the fear of being jobless except the unemployed; No
one can tell of lack than the one lacking. But you know what? Some of us have experience the same thing
and God gave us victory and expect us to encourage others going through similar situation. 2 Corinthian
“Blessed be God even father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of mercies and the God of all
comfort who comforteth us in all our tribulation that we may be able to comfort them which
are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God”
People have run the same race. We are surrounded by people who have struggled through situations and
spent countless nights crying to God for strength. They are witnesses to God’s love and grace. They are
witnesses to the life of faith and they survived. How did they manage to survive?
They did not do it alone. We are not made to live this life alone. God has given us people in our lives
to run the race of life with us. This race is not a sprint but a marathon. For anyone who has ever run a
marathon, there are moments of highs and even more moment of lows. Everyone finds a point where
he or she is ready to give up. Weighed down by the insecurities and doubts that slow us down in this life,
you begin to feel that you cannot go any further. But you are not alone. God is with you. God has also
surrounded us with others who are in this same race and struggling with the same fears and pain. They
run along side you and we are to encourage one another to finish the race successfully. Hebrew 12:1
“Therefore we also since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside
every weight, and sin which easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is
Praise God that He has not left us alone He has given us first and foremost a Comforter in the Holy Spirit.
“And I will pray the father and he shall give you another Comforter, that may abide with you
Also John 14: 18 Jesus reaffirm it
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you”
As children of God and particularly women, we have a natural affinity for relationships. Do not be afraid
to ask someone genuine for help. Allow God to direct you toward people who will care for you and help
you genuinely bear burden. Prayerfully seek an older and mature person to mentor you. Allow stories
of their struggles and faith to comfort you. Then, look for ways that you too can mentor someone else.
We need one another other. Come alongside other Christians and run the race of faith together. God will
see us through successfully in Jesus mighty name. We shall not fall by the wayside. We shall make it. And
You are welcome to your month of “Possibilities” ╦
